What each one actually is
Acrylic liner / one-day system: a molded acrylic or PVC shell, custom-measured, glued and sealed over your existing tub and walls (or into the alcove after the tub is removed). Installed by a national chain's crew in a day. Solid-surface wall panels are a similar idea.
Custom tile walk-in shower: the tub and old walls come out; new backer board, a waterproofing membrane and sloped pan are built; then tile on the walls and floor, with a bench, niche, and glass as you like. About a week, by a licensed contractor with a permit.
Cost
In Medford in 2026 the two often land in the same neighborhood β roughly $8,000β$15,000 for a liner quote and $9,000β$16,000 for a tile conversion. Liner pricing varies a lot with the sales visit; tile pricing varies with tile and glass. Neither is the cheap option people expect the liner to be.
Speed
Liner wins, clearly: one day versus about a week. If you have one bathroom and can't be without a shower, that matters. (We handle that by timing demo for a Monday and getting you showering by the weekend.)
Durability and water
This is where they part ways. A liner is a skin over what's already there. If the old tub was leaking at the drain, it still is β underneath. Sealant at the seams and the drain is the only thing between water and the cavity behind the shell, and sealant has a lifespan. When a liner fails you find out from a soft floor.
A tile shower's waterproofing is a continuous membrane and pan under the tile, flood-tested before the tile goes on and inspected by the county. Grout and caulk are cosmetic; the membrane is the waterproofing. Built right, a tile shower outlasts the house's next two owners.
Looks, layout, and safety
A liner is a rectangle in a limited set of colors and patterns. It can't be curbless, can't have a tiled bench, a real niche, or a linear drain, and grab bars go through the shell into whatever is behind it. Tile is whatever you want: curbless entry, textured anti-slip floor, bench, niche, any color, bars anchored into blocking we build in. For an aging-in-place bathroom the difference isn't cosmetic β the curbless entry and the anti-slip floor are the safety features.
Resale and inspection
Home inspectors in Jackson County note liner systems specifically because they hide the condition of what's underneath. Buyers over 50 β the Rogue Valley's biggest pool β look for a walk-in shower they'll be able to use for years. A tile walk-in reads as an upgrade; a liner reads as a cover.
When we'd honestly point you to a liner
- You're selling within a year and need the bathroom to look fresh cheaply.
- It's a rental and you want something a tenant can't break.
- You truly cannot be without a shower for a week and have no second bathroom or neighbor's to borrow.
Otherwise, for the same money, build the real thing.
